Our audience’s attention span keeps getting smaller, and at times it feels like the only thing they’re reading is headlines. So, we try to hook them with bold claims – which is fine when they are accurate. However, such claims can completely miss the nuances of the complex research behind the headline. For example, a hook like ‘X Causes Cancer’ is likely to draw in audience members but lacks details.


This can create a gap between what your health content reports and what the research actually shows. Too often, that gap is more like a chasm. When brands better understand that health journalism skills require nuance, they're not only providing more ethical information but also making their brands stand out as authoritative and trusted sources of health information.


A Primer to the Nuances of Research

Reporting on research is where some writers fall flat with their grasp of nuanced health writing, because research studies have many points where interpretation can go wrong. One area I see is a lack of understanding of the difference between absolute and relative risks. Knowing the difference is vital to correctly conveying risk factors to your audience. Numbers can easily confuse or wrongly express the risk to your readers, so you need to understand them before trying to explain them.


Absolute risk: This is the likelihood that something will happen under certain conditions.

For example, you have a bag with 100 marbles: 25 red, 25 purple, 25 orange, and 25 white. If you reach into the bag to pull one out, you have a 1 in 25 chance of getting a white one. But you’re more likely to get any other color. The higher the absolute risk, the greater the chance that something will happen.


Comparing risks is easier when using the same base number. It’s more challenging to compare different base numbers. For example, if you had another bag of marbles that had 10 of each color, you now have a 1 in 10 chance of pulling out a white one. The numbers look very different – 10 out of 40 vs 25 out of 100 – but both show 25%.


Relative risk: This tells you nothing about the true risk of an event. You may see headlines that read something like “You are three times more likely to get cancer if you eat BBQ.” The question to ask is three times more likely than what? Relative risk compares the risk between two groups with different conditions, behaviors, or environments. That comparison is why context matters when reporting risk.


Acknowledge any conflicting information by sharing the evidence. It’s a bit tricky, but important. When you interpret and make statements about risks, getting the information wrong deceives your readers.


Understanding Language, Context, and Diversity

Research context is nuanced in ways that sometimes require you to sit and think about what is really going on. When I was a kid, my mom would always say to wear a hat when going out in the cold so that I wouldn’t get sick. This relates to a widely reported study showing that people lose most of their body heat from their heads. The problem was the study's context. The researchers measured heat loss in soldiers who were fully dressed, except for headgear. Can you spot the flaw? Yes, if the only part of your body not covered is your head, you will lose more heat there.


Using conditional language will better reflect the study data, because it’s extremely rare for something to be all-or-none. Adding conditional language can help you reflect that. Replace terms like ‘will’ with ‘may’ or ‘conclusively’ with ‘suggests’ and instead of generalizing for the entire population, use ‘in some populations.’


One consideration some people forget to consider is the diversity – or lack of – in a study. For example, research has a long history of using healthy white college-age males for test subjects. This completely misses the mark for much of the population. Not just women, but people of color, those with chronic health issues, and older adults. This flaw is easy to spot, but it is often overlooked when writing about results.


How the Nuanced Skills of Health Journalism Get Lost

Health content created by writers may miss the mark when there is a time crunch or pressure to keep the data simple. This can happen when there is an editorial incentive to turn preliminary findings into a new story. In the rush to get ahead of the pack and stay timely, the writer may miss the true context of the research, especially if the writer doesn’t understand how to truly interpret research.

When reviewing your writer’s work, consider the nuances in the reporting. Question your content creators on their understanding of this nuance. Health content writing skills come fairly naturally to nurses, who are trained to understand complex topics and have direct clinical experience in educating patients. This applies not just to the basics but also when outcomes may be uncertain. Working with patients, nurses see how oversimplified advice plays out in real care — for good and bad. For example, ‘natural’ supplements are perceived as good for you because they are natural. In my experience, patients will overdose on supplements, thinking that if a little is good, more is better. They don’t realize they may damage their liver or kidneys, or don’t consider potential interactions with other medications.


This is where clinical experience helps the writer dig deeper, looking beyond the study summary and having a feel for the patient experience. Nurses are trained as skeptics who should ask questions and clarify information. When reviewing research, they know to ask, ‘For whom does this research apply, and in what context?’ As health writers, they find a balance between creating simple, shareable content and producing quality medical writing.


Nuanced writing is an underrated skill, especially when high output is required, and AI is being pushed. But the importance of creating writing of substance that more accurately helps grow the audience’s understanding cannot be understated. By taking time to add clarity to the complex and fine points of research, the reporting is refined into work that makes up good health journalism. Teams shouldn’t see efforts to add nuance as slowing down the writing process. Instead, consider the process as improving the medical writing quality and building long-term brand equity.
